Card shows reward preparation more than impulse. A short checklist keeps you focused, protects your budget, and helps you leave with cards you actually need. The steps below cover planning, packing, buying, and follow-up.

Use a notes app or spreadsheet for your want list and spending log. Keep it simple enough to update at the table.

Before the show

Make a want list by set, player, or theme. Separate needs from wants so you know what matters most. Set a spending limit and carry it in a way you can track. Write down your top targets in order.

Check the organizer’s details for hours, location, and any posted table map. Charge your phone. Pack penny sleeves, top loaders, a binder or card box, a magnifier, a phone charger, and water. Prepare a small trade box with cards you are willing to trade; note the values you want to discuss. Leave cards you are not trading at home.

At the show

Walk the room once before buying. Note table numbers for cards you like and compare condition and price. Ask before handling cards. Inspect raw cards in good light for corners, edges, surface, and centering; look for creases, print lines, and whitening. For graded cards, check that the slab is intact and the label matches the card.

When buying several cards from one seller, ask politely about a combined price. Keep purchases in one bag or box. Record each purchase in your spending log as you go. Do not leave your binder, bag, or phone unattended. If a card is not on your list, pause and ask whether it improves your collection more than the cards you planned to buy.

After the show

Sort purchases into keep, trade, sell, and upgrade piles. Check them against your want list and update it. Enter totals in your spending log. Store cards properly: penny sleeve first, then a top loader for cards that need extra protection; use a binder or box for set cards. Note any seller or table you want to revisit, and follow up only if you agreed to. Put supplies back in your show bag so the next trip starts ready.

What should I bring to a card show?

Bring a want list, a spending limit, penny sleeves, top loaders, a binder or card box, a magnifier, a phone charger, and water. Pack only cards you plan to trade or show.

How do I avoid overspending?

Set a limit before you go and record each purchase. Walk the room before buying. Ask for a combined price when buying several cards from one seller.

How should I inspect a card?

Ask permission, remove it from the sleeve if allowed, and check corners, edges, surface, and centering in good light. Look for creases, print lines, and whitening. For graded cards, check that the slab is intact and the label matches the card.
